Leonida is the biggest map in Rockstar's history: twice the size of GTA V's with buildings real inside and out

Rockstar's head of development Aaron Garbut confirms in Game Informer that GTA VI's world is twice the size of GTA V's, and details the six regions that make it up, from Vice City to Mount Kalaga.

Community estimates are over: Rockstar has put an official figure on Leonida’s size. In the Game Informer cover story, Aaron Garbut - head of development and co-studio head - confirms it is the largest world Rockstar has ever built “by some degree”: roughly twice the size of GTA V’s map and “significantly more detailed”.

Garbut stresses that the leap isn’t just about sprawl: “we obsessed about every part. The rooftops, the alleys, the internals and everything in between to the point we hit a critical mass with the numbers of our interiors, and you start to feel the buildings are more real inside and out. This world is a cohesive whole with the density of content and a hand-crafted quality to every bit”.

The story confirms the state’s six regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. It’s the first time Rockstar has named them all officially in the press, after some of them were already hinted at in the trailers and on the game’s website.

The scale fits with the day’s other reveals: a localized weather system that varies by area and 170 species spread across biomes. On November 19 we’ll find out whether all that density holds up behind the wheel.
