Rockstar has writing teams just for GTA VI's pedestrian dialogue and advertising
Rupert Humphries and James Horton in LOVE Magazine: a pedestrian dialogue team in LA, and advertising and comedy writers across New York, LA and London.
Rockstar has writing teams dedicated to what it calls GTA VI’s “background noise”, according to Rupert Humphries, senior vice president of narrative, in the interview in issue 27 of LOVE Magazine (out October 5, 2026). Insider Gaming reported it.
Who writes the “background noise”
Humphries says they have brought together “an amazing team of writers and creatives” for all the background noise that brings the city and world to life. By his quote, there is “a specific team of pedestrian dialogue writers in LA” and another team of advertising and comedy writers across New York, LA and London.
He describes a team from all sorts of backgrounds that shares a sense of humour and a wish to have fun with the ridiculousness of people, the media and advertising. He adds: “none of us see it as background!” To him it is part of the game’s tapestry and of the experience of living in that wild world.
“No background”
Polygon quotes a similar idea from James Horton, writing director: “In a way, there’s no ‘background’ in this game. There’s just foreground you’re not paying attention to right now.” According to Polygon, the interview suggests players can spend hours watching pedestrians and still overhear new conversations.
What is missing
We have not read the full LOVE interview; the quotes come from Insider Gaming and Polygon (https://www.polygon.com/grand-theft-auto-gta-6-love-magazine-interview-npc-details/), so the level is medio-verificado. For more on the world’s inhabitants, see GTA VI’s NPC population.
